The Mixing game prototype
"The Mixing" is a spin-off of a game idea I had a loooong time ago during another game jam. I needed a break from other projects, and the PIGSquad "Finish Your Game" Jam 2023 was happening, so I decided to dust this one off and see if I could get it to a working prototype. Most of the game mechanics were already built, so this jam focused on cutscene content and tutorializing the mechanic. Since my main goal here was to see if the game could introduce the mechanics properly, I actually don't want to spoil it! If you give it a try and it seems cool, let me know. I think it should take from 5-15 minutes to run through.
The main things I'm interested in if I kept working on this, are enabling creativity through the mechanic, and trying to communicate a basic fantasy story. The original idea I had for the game was (very) loosely based on the book "A Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula K. LeGuin, and some other YA books I read long ago. I wanted to do a lot more in the prototype, but:
1) I was not prepared for how time-consuming it is to do simple RPG cutscenes in Unity.
2) I found writing the few lines of dialogue here to be really challenging, because it has to be super terse (since reading in games sucks). But at the same time it has to introduce characters, mechanics, controls and exposition. That's really hard!
So as per usual I didn't have time for at least 50% of my todo list, but I'm still pretty happy I got a prototype done, and I think it at least introduces the concepts successfully (though if anyone plays it I'll be interested to know if my assumptions were correct).
Thanks for reading and/or playing!
